Application of 355nm UV Laser in Capsule Surface Marking
Jul 21 , 2022Application of 355nm UV Laser in Capsule Surface Marking
In 1961, China developed the first laser. After more than half a century of development, laser technology and its applications have developed rapidly in China. Among them, laser marking has penetrated into all walks of life and has become the mainstream marking method, gradually replacing traditional inkjet coding, ink printing and other processes.
Laser marking is a marking method that uses a high-energy-density laser to locally irradiate a material to vaporize or discolor the surface material, thereby leaving a permanent mark. Laser marking can print various characters, symbols and patterns, and the size of characters can be from millimeters to microns, which has special significance for product anti-counterfeiting.

The laser marking application scenarios of different types of lasers are also different. The RFH 355nm ultraviolet nanosecond solid-state laser has small spot size, high beam quality (M2<1.2), narrow pulse width (20ns), good penetration, and low heat generation. With the characteristics of high output energy and high peak power, it belongs to the cold light source, which can be well absorbed by the material and causes less damage to the material. Laser marking on the capsule surface is one of them.
Capsules refer to capsules made of special film-forming materials (such as gelatin, cellulose, polysaccharides, etc.), into which the contents (such as powder, liquid drugs, etc.) or doses are loaded for easy swallowing . For a long time, capsules have been commonly used packaging by pharmaceutical and health care product manufacturers. In order to increase product identification and prevent counterfeiting, manufacturers use inks that meet relevant standards to mark the surface of capsules. However, consumers in the market have certain misunderstandings and prejudices about edible inks, and their acceptance is not high.
355nm ultraviolet nanosecond solid-state laser marking on the surface of the capsule can solve these problems very well. For manufacturers, the laser marking method will not bring in pollutants, has no toxic side effects, no consumables, and has high marking efficiency. The marking effect is delicate, and the integration into the assembly line can also liberate manpower, reduce costs and increase efficiency; for consumers, there is no fear of ink, which greatly improves the acceptance. Therefore, the application of laser marking is a win-win for both supply and demand.
